Universidad e Hispanidad.
Nordic language policies for higher education and their multi-layered motivations
2016
Language policies have been drafted in Nordic higher education with the obvious, but unproblematised and unchallenged motivation caused by internationalisation. In this article, we analyse the various motivations for drafting language policies in Nordic higher education and the ideological implications of those motivations. We do this by approaching the question from multiple (macro, meso and micro) viewpoints, in order to make visible some of the undercurrents in higher education language policy. We are particularly interested in the explicit motivations for language policy change, and the explicit and implicit actors and action represented in our data. We will first discuss the background…
International Education Studies: Increasing Their Linguistic Comparability by Developing Judgmental Reviews
2012
In international education studies, the different-language test versions need to be equally difficult to read and answer for the test to be valid. To ensure comparability, several quality control procedures have been developed. Among these, surprisingly little attention has been paid to judgmental reviews and their ability to identify language-related sources of bias. Also, the reviews have often failed in identifying biases. This paper explored whether it is possible to improve the ability of judgmental reviews to identify language-related sources of bias. A new review was made of two Finnish items which in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2000 reading test showed …
Taking part in Nordic collaboration : nursing students' experiences and perceptions from a learning perspective: a qualitative study
2015
BACKGROUND: Nordic networking of different kinds has a long tradition aiming to increase collaboration and understanding between citizens in different countries. Cultural competence in relation to health care and nursing is important for clinical nurses and is a central issue in nurse education. OBJECTIVE: To gain an understanding of what nurse students experienced and learned during an intensive course in diabetes together with students and nurse educators from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands. METHODS: In 2012, an intensive course within the Nordic network, Nordkvist, was conducted in Faroe Islands with the theme "Nursing - to live a good life with diabetes"…
Molecular biology, China and the West
2000
More than 15 years ago, in November 1985, I travelled to China for the first time. I joined a symposium on developmental biology in the Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology (CBI), organised by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max‐Planck‐Gesellschaft in Germany. The symposium was meant to provide perspectives for the future of the Max Planck Guest Laboratory, just founded in the CBI. When I attended, I did not anticipate that my visit to Shanghai would initiate a long‐term commitment to China. I did not even expect to return to China in the near future. But early in 1987, my colleague Uli Schwarz from the Max Planck Institute of Developmental Biology in Tubingen, who was and still is in…
Troubling encounters: Exclusion, racism and responses of male African students in Poland
2016
This paper examines the experiences of a group of *African students in Poland, with the aim of understanding the affective and practical coping tactics they employ in response to social exclusion and racism. The analysis of coping strategies follows an in-depth overview of experiences of racialisation, othering and racial discrimination in both institutional and ordinary, day-to-day encounters. A significant body of literature and research highlights ways in which racism functions through material practices as well as overt and veiled dynamics of exclusion and territorialism. The study sheds light on the bodily nature of racism, highlighting the recurrent practices, contexts and interaction…
Analysis of Spanish policies for the integration of immigrant schoolchildren
2016
The Organic Law on the Improvement of the National Education Quality (Ley Organica de Reforma de la Calidad Educativa) readdressed one of the most significant educational issues: educational policies related to immigrant students. Therefore, this is an appropriate moment to evaluate these types of policies in three singular Spanish regions: Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia. This article presents an analysis of the measures taken in three Spanish regions: Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia in response to students’ reception, acceptance and enrolment of immigrant students. A qualitative methodology based on the comparative method is used. Diverse similarities, but also specific characteristics an…
Multilayered perspectives on language policy in higher education : Finland, Estonia, and Latvia in comparison
2016
This article analyses language policies in higher education (HE) in Finland, Estonia, and Latvia, as well as the European Union (EU). We take a multilayered approach to language policies in order to illuminate the intertwined nature of local, national, and international language policies in HE. We are particularly interested in the construction of national language(s) and the language(s) of internationalisation in our case countries. Finland, Estonia, and Latvia share common features as relatively small non-Anglophone countries in the Baltic region, while simultaneously having somewhat differing political and cultural histories. The results of our discursive analysis indicate that while the…

Dažādības izpratnes veicināšana sešus gadus veciem bērniem literatūras nodarbībās starptautiskajā skolā
2020
